Disclaimer
This guide reflects what has worked for our clients and has often resulted in a high return on investment. However, like all marketing and advertising, there is no guarantee of results. That said, the steps and recommendations here are what our professional service, home service, attorney, and other lead-generating business clients use to achieve results as high as $15 back for every $1 spent in ad spend.
Step 1 — A High Converting Website
Before you spend a dollar on ads, your website needs to be ready to convert the traffic you send it. A great ad driving people to a weak website is money wasted. Here is what to focus on:
- Optimized for mobile. The majority of Facebook traffic comes from phones. If your site is hard to use on mobile, you are losing leads.
- Loads quickly. Slow pages kill conversions. Aim for under three seconds on mobile.
- Set up with tracking and analytics. If you cannot measure what is happening, you cannot improve it. Facebook Pixel, Google Analytics, and call tracking should all be in place before launching.
- Prominent call to action. It should be immediately obvious what you want the visitor to do. One clear action, not five competing options.
- Key benefits above the fold. Lead with what your audience cares about, not your logo or company history. Answer the question "what is in it for me?" before they scroll.
Step 2 — The Right Offer
Your offer is what you are asking people to do or receive in exchange for their contact information. It does not need to be complex, but it does need to be compelling. Think about:
- What is your unique selling point? What makes your service different? Maybe you are not the cheapest, but you deliver results in a way nobody else does. Lean into that.
- Keep it simple. Sometimes the offer is just: call us to learn more. Or mention you found us on Facebook for a discount. Or request a free sample. Simple offers often outperform complicated ones.
Step 3 — The Right Ad Images, Videos, and Copy
Yes, everyone knows you need good creative. But "good" does not mean expensive. Some of the highest-performing ads we have run looked like they were thrown together in 10 minutes.
- Show your service or product prominently. The viewer should immediately understand what you do. The next most prominent element should be the key benefit that speaks to your audience.
- "Ugly" ads often outperform polished ones. You do not need a $50,000 video production. Authentic, real-world images and videos frequently beat studio-quality content because they feel more trustworthy.
- Get reviews into your copy. Social proof in the ad itself is powerful. A real customer quote in the first two lines can dramatically improve click-through rates.
- Test long-form and short-form copy. There is no universal winner. Write to your audience, not about yourself. Focus on their problem and how you solve it.
Step 4 — Audience Targeting
Targeting is where a lot of advertisers go wrong by either giving up too soon or setting it and forgetting it. Good targeting takes active management and a willingness to keep testing.
- Do not just turn on Advantage+ and assume it will win. Meta's automatic targeting is a starting point, not a strategy. Test it alongside more defined audiences to see what actually performs for your specific business.
- Run broad and narrow at the same time. Test a wider audience alongside tightly targeted ones. The winner often surprises you.
- Build on what is winning. Use the data from successful audiences to inform your next test, not your gut feeling. Narrow in methodically.
- Do not panic when frequency rises. For the right audience, seeing your ad multiple times is not a problem. It gives potential customers more chances to act when the timing is right for them.
Don’t Give Up.
Sometimes I see results in the first week that blow me away. Other times it takes a month or two before we find the winning funnel. Both happen. The key is to keep watching the data, keep testing, and not pull the plug before the campaign has had a real chance to prove itself.
